The Shambles is one of the most visited streets in the UK, it is believed to be the oldest street in York. You will notice that the building lean towards each other. If you look at the pictures below you can see that in some buildings it is probably possible to lean across and touch somebody in the opposite building. There is probably a good reason for this if you read on.
The street was orginally used for butchers, in 1872 the records show that there were twenty six butchers on the street. The Shambles was perfectly designed for been a street full of butchers, if you look carefully you will see on the sides of the cobbled street the foot path is raised, the cobbled centre part of the street is where the butchers used to through away there waste products and it would get washed down the street several times a week.
