Brimham Rocks is managed by the national trust and attracts around 150,000 vistors each year. Orginally owned by fountains abbey (just down the road) it was sold in 1539. It has been bought and sold many times by private owners untill it was given to the National Trust in 1978. The weird and wonderful rocks that you can see are made from Millstone Grit. The have survived really well compared with its surroundings.
When you look closly at the rocks you will notice that there are lines of weekness in the rock where ice, sun, wind and rain attack the rock which form the aliend like landscape. Some of the rocks have been named, the more commonly known ones are the Druid's writing desk and the dancing bear.
Brimham House was built after 1792 by Lord Grantly, the owner at the time and it still stands there today with a little renovation by the National Trust. It is now used as a information centre and gift shop.
